Driving Cross Country

Before you leave on a trip you gotta make sure you have the clothes, the money and essential gadgets. It seems before I travel I have to sell all that I own, and pack everything that I own. On January 22th I will be traveling across the country with a man I’ll refer to as Mr.Libby. Mr.Libby has graciously agreed to meet me in Las Vegas where he’ll rendezvous with me and my family. As it so happens it’s my brother’s 21st birthday.

After the craziness that will happen in Vegas we hope to set off into the desert via route 40 to the east. So naturally I’m a little worried how that will play out. I’ve known Mr.Libby for some time now and I believe we’ll have a safe and interesting journey.

Prior to me leaving I’ve started reading Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” which has thus far gotten me more and more excited. He however was heading west and I am heading east.

The plan is there is no plan : Just a guideline.

1. Kingman, Arizona – A route 66 town. This place is honestly boring to me. My brother and Mother live here. I will say my goodbyes here. After Kingman it’s the open desert for us with nothing to do for miles on end.
a. I’ll probably be the first to drive. It would make sense. Goodbye to the west. Goodbye to California, Arizona and Nevada where I have passed every rock, tree and shrub a thousand times. It’s time to explore the wicked, wicked east. Why is the east wicked? Why everyone has told me I’m crazy for going East (and you might be thinking it too)

2. OPEN ROAD. MUSIC. SNACKS. STARS. TRUCKERS. MR.LIBBY’s CRAZY IDEAS..

3. Washington DC – this is the destination if all goes to the guideline.

Preparing for a cross country journey.

Since I’m moving I’ve sold all that doesn’t affect me. I have no furniture. Just clothes, books and a few cameras. Oh… and some art work.

A cooler of snacks and water – I’ll probably grab coffee along the way but the best thing is to just drink water. I have about 7 water bottles.

Car checkup – My car was recently fixed. I have no issues with breaks, suspension, axels, oil, engine problems.. none of the like. Except.. I ought to change out a headlight. But that’s easy.

A collection of music. I’ve travelled so much that at first there are songs I have to hear. But after a while my ears grow tired of music and so therefor I’ve created a CD of light music, so it’s just ambient noise.

A pillow, small blanket, first aid kit, aspirin, and ipod for when I want avoid listening to Mr.Libby’s music.

I’ll grab a book or two to read but that’s impossible to do on the road. Also I have a feeling I won’t stop looking at the scenery. America is a big wonderful and beautiful place. Sasha said he wanted to understand the soul of America. Perhaps this trip will help me to learn it, and then show it to him.
